In August 1998 I visited Bruges in Belgium as part of my annual holiday.

Brugges is known as the "Venice of the North" because the city has many canals both in and around it. The city is quite compact, and most of the finer parts can easily be seen on foot. Probably one of the best known landmarks of the city is the Belfort or Bell Tower which houses a superb Carillon.

I hope that the pictures above give some indication of the variety which is to be found in Bruges.

The city is conveniently placed a short drive from Calais and as such provides an ideal weekend break for the UK visitor.
